A strong and powerful, long and over-sized, Shin-Shinto kinoto katana. This is a work by the well-known Osaka master Gassan Sadakazu, an Imperial Court Artisan who was active during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He was famous for expanding the influence of the Gassan school and lineage. He worked in a number of styles, including replication of old Koto as we see in this work.

The blade is massive, having an outstanding length as an utushi-mono of a Namboku-cho era tachi with a stout sugata, elongated O-kissaki, and wide robust mihaba. The nakago is ubu and signed Naniwa Ju Gassan Unryushi Minamoto Sadakazu Seitan with Kokuin “hot stamp” and dated Keio San Nen Juni-gatsu Hi (a day in December 1867). The jigane is a sparkling ko-itame interspersed with chikei. The Bizen inspired hamon of an undulating gunome midare features deep ashi and kinsuji, as well as a dusting of nie. The hamon finishes in a thick midare boshi.

Stored in shirasaya with sayagaki by Kanzan Sato sensei, and double gold foil habaki.
