Yokoyama Sukekane Katana, Meiji Period, 1869 NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon
$8,500

Features:

A strong, very thick, and powerful late Shinshinto katana. This is a work by Yokoyama Sukekane who carried on the Bizen tradition into the late 1800’s. His work displays the classic traits of the Bizen Yokoyama school, with a tight jigane and ebullient choji gunome midare. This work was completed in the early Meiji period, as the power of the samurai waned, but swordsmiths were still creating masterful works for practitioners of bushido.

The blade is very thick and heavy, with a stout sugata. The nakago is ubu and signed Bishu Ju Osafune Yokoyama Sukekane Saku. It is dated Meiji Ninen Hachigatsu Kichijitsu, or a lucky day in the Fall of 1869. The jigane is a sparkling bright ko-itame. The hamon is a classic choji gunome midare in nioi deki with a sugu-yakidashi. The choji formations are large and overlapping, harkening to the spirit of Kamakura-era Ichimonji work. The hamon finishes in a thick maru boshi.

With shirasaya and gold foil habaki.
